You start your new policy and assume the old one will just... stop. It doesn't. Insurance policies auto-renew unless you cancel them in writing. What happens: Your old policy renews, your bank account gets charged, you have two active policies, and sorting it out becomes a headache. The Fix: Always formally cancel in writing. Get confirmation with a cancellation date in writing.
Not Updating Your Lienholder
If you have a car loan or mortgage, your lender is listed on your policy. When you switch, the new policy needs to list the same lender.
